DESCRIPTION:
'Caleo' is a vibrant, brightly hued depiction of a cartoon tiger and pink flower. Typical of the artist's dynamic oeuvre, the print is suffused with expression and motion, and typical of the artist's explosive use of color and line.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Ellen Berkenbilt paints recurring subjects -- tigers, high heels floral bouquets -- that allow to ruminate on line, color, and form. A painter's painter, Berkenbilt employs her figurative subject matter in order to explore the boundaries of abstraction and as a celebration of the tactile joys of painting. Born in 1958 and represented by Anton Kern Gallery, she is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship. Her work is held in the collections of MOMA, the Whitney, and MOCA LA.
