DESCRIPTION:
Minnesota-based sculptor Nicole Havekost painstakingly sews, adorns, and stuffs soft anthropomorphic sculptures that offer a poignant, joyful commentary on lived female experience. Ripe with raw physicality, these headless sculptures reflect a lifelong struggle to tame and corral the female body in a world that demands so much from it. As the artist says: "I have spent most of my life trying to control my body and make it do and be exactly what I thought it should be. Turns out your body has other desires and needs."

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Havekost lives and works in Rochester, Minnesota. She earned a BFA in printmaking from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from the University of New Mexico, also in printmaking. Havekost has exhibited her work in Minneapolis, Boston, Dallas; Eureka, California; and Tasmania. She is a 2013 and 2018 recipient of the Minnesota State Arts Board’s Artist Initiative grant.
